The starting point
Revisiting
“Lovely Day.”
I took Gap’s “Lovely Day” commercial and used it as the starting point for a new generative film. I wanted to keep the music, camera angles and dance structure, while changing the cast, wardrobe and photographic treatment.
I looked at Gap’s recent campaigns as a reference for styling, light and skin. I kept the studio pale and simple, with more shape in the light and a cast of distinct people.
The visual direction
The same starting point.
A different treatment.
Frames from the original commercial
and the finished reimagining.

A different cast.
I wanted faces with character and variety in the hair and styling. The new cast had to work in the original close-ups, overhead angles and group shots.
Directing the work
The notes
got specific.
I directed my proprietary AI system through the casting, styling and shot revisions. The original clips guided the movement; approved images set the appearance.
I kept reviewing the relationship between the clothes, the camera angle and the performance. In one low-angle shot, that meant changing both the performer and the outfit.
For the ending, I wanted the Gap logo to appear behind the dancer’s arms, then remain as she left the frame. We finished that in Resolve, holding the actual empty set at the end of the shot.

Original commercial: Gap, “Khaki Soul” / “Lovely Day.” Music: “Lovely Day,” performed by Bill Withers. Original film and choreography provide the basis for this independent reinterpretation.
