PaprCut / Product & workflow development

From written words to a Premiere rough cut.

The challenge

Find the words. Shape the story.

Documentary stories are built from what people say. Finding the right words in a traditional editing system means repeatedly playing and listening to hours of footage. That search is difficult and time-consuming.

The thinking behind the work

Your written edit becomes a footage edit.

The design decision

Every sentence carries its footage.

Every passage stays attached to its original clip and timing. Selecting and rearranging sentences builds the edit. Export carries those decisions into Premiere as a sequence of the original footage and audio.

My contribution

From transcript to timeline.

I designed and built a native Mac application around ingest, transcript review, story structure and Premiere export. Directors and producers can develop the rough cut in words, then hand an editable sequence to the editor.

  • Select and arrange source-linked passages
  • Develop acts, chapters and story structures
  • Export an editable Adobe Premiere Pro sequence

The result

A rough cut, ready to keep editing.

Native Mac application in use

PaprCut exports an editable Premiere Pro sequence with the selected footage and audio in order, linked to its source. The native Mac application is in use, building on earlier versions used in documentary production.
